La Peri Giù verso il tempio del sole! Là sta un amuleto, sulla cui pietra risplende un segno, impresso da un lampo - e là vedo pure anche un foglio sul cui candore impresso risplende il sigillo del re Salomone; forse mi riveleranno dove mai sulla terra o nel mare è riposto il potere magico, il nobile dono che schiude l'Eden ai peccatori, forse il mio occhio sarà capace di leggervi, giù al tempio! Tenore solo Discende allora con lieta speranza, sorride il cielo con occhio benigno, e le arcate dorate della sera sono ancora schiuse verso occidente. E ora volando sulla valle di Baalbek, scorge un bambino che gioca e canta tra le rose selvatiche, roseo e spontaneo come le rose stesse. Presso il fanciullo, che stanco del gioco, sta a riposare sdraiato fra i fiori, ella vede scendere da un destriero accaldato un uomo esausto che subito, verso una fonte cinta di alte erbe, si china a bere, poi svelto volge il suo viso selvaggio verso il bel bimbo, che senza timore siede, sebbene non sia sia mai visto alla luce del giorno uno sguardo più selvaggio di questo, di aspetto terribile, orrendo miscuglio come nube di tempesta fatta di tenebre e fuoco, là alberga ogni vizio, vi stanno effigiate le malefatte compiute, le frodi, l'assassinio dell'ospite, la sposa tradita, in lettere di sangue stanno scritti su quel viso. Mezzo soprano solo Ma ascolta, il richiamo del Vespro alla preghiera, mentre il sole discende quietamente, fra i mille minareti della Siria, si diffonde ora, vibrando, nell'aria; il bimbo si leva dal letto di fiori che gli aveva fatto da guanciale e si inginocchia sul prato in fiore mentre con le sue pure labbra angeliche pronuncia il nome eterno di Dio; sembra, con le mani e il volto rivolti in alto verso il cielo vespertino, un angioletto, che quaggiù si è smarrito e va in cerca della sua dimora. Tenore solo E cosa prova allora quel peccatore che sta là mentre gli tornano in mente i tanti anni passati nei peccati e nel sangue, e che nell'oscuro trascorrere della sua vita invano ha cercato la via della salvezza, ché mai nessuno gli ha offerto la grazia di un ramo d'ulivo! L'uomo C'era un tempo, o bimbo felice, che giovane e puro come te era il mio agire e il mio pregare - ma ora!
