L'esprit des marins est entouré par une pensée secrète :
Il y a là une nymphe triste avec sa tresse défaite,
Presque cachée dans les roseaux mélodieux,
Parfois, elle chante une chanson sur sa chevelure de soie,
L'azur de ses yeux pleins de larmes, les perles de ses dents
Et son cœur, plein d'un amour non partagé.
Quand un petit bateau passe -- un marin fasciné
L'écoute, et s'arrête de ramer ;
Elle s'arrête de chanter -- mais longtemps après
Il lui semble l'entendre chanter sur l'eau
Et voir la nymphe dans les roseaux, avec sa tresse défaite.
