You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of April 20, we are $4,600 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today and join dozens of other supporters in making this important renovation possible!

Dort unten in der Mühle

Language: German (Deutsch)

Dort unten in der Mühle
Saß ich in [süßer]1 Ruh'
Und sah dem Räderspiele
Und sah [den Wassern]2 zu.

Sah zu der blanken Säge,
Es war mir wie ein Traum,
Die bahnte lange Wege
In [einen]3 Tannenbaum.

Die Tanne war wie lebend,
In Trauermelodie
Durch alle Fasern bebend
Sang diese Worte sie:

Du [kehrst]4 zur rechten Stunde,
O Wanderer, hier ein,
Du bist's, für den die Wunde
Mir dringt ins Herz hinein!

Du bist's, für den wird werden,
Wenn kurz gewandert du,
Dies Holz im Schoß der Erden
Ein Schrein zur [langen]5 Ruh'.

Vier Bretter sah ich fallen,
Mir [ward's] 6 ums [Herze]7 schwer,
Ein Wörtlein wollt' ich lallen,
Da ging das Rad nicht mehr.

Daaronder in de molen

Language: Dutch (Nederlands) after the German (Deutsch)

Daaronder in de molen
Zat ik in zoete rust,
En zag de raad'ren spelen
En hoe het water gutst'.

De houtzaag zag 'k bewegen
- Het was mij als een droom -,
Die baande lange wegen
Diep door een sparrenboom.

De spar leek wel te leven,
Een droeve zang zong hij;
'k Zag al zijn vezels beven,
Hoor wat hij zingend zei:

Je hebt op tijd gevonden,
O reiziger, dit oord,
Jij bent voor wie de wonde
Zich diep mijn hart in boort!

Jij bent voor wie de spade,
Na reis en kort respijt,
Dit hout graaft in de aarde,
Een schrijn voor lange tijd.

Vier planken zag ik tuim'len,
Mijn hart bedrukte 't zeer,
Een woordje wou ik staam'len,
Toen ging het rad niet meer.
