Es gieng ein Mann zur Frühlingszeit
Durch Busch' und Felder weit und breit
Um Birke, Buch' und Erle;
Der Bäume Grün im Mayenlicht,
Die Blumen drunter sah er nicht;
Er suchte seine Perle.

Die Perle war seine höchstes Gut,
Er hatt' um sie des Meeres Fluth
Durchschifft, und viel gelitten;
Von ihr des Lebens Trost gehofft,
Im Busen sie bewahrt, und oft
Dem Räuber abgestritten.

Die sucht' er nun mit Weh und Ach:
Da wies man ihm den hellen Bach,
Und drinn die goldne Schmerle;
Nichts half der Bach im Sonnenglanz,
Im Bache nichts der Schmerlen Tanz;
Er suchte seine Perle.
Und suchen wird er immer so,
Wird nicht des Lebens werden froh,
Nicht mehr die Morgenstunden
Am purpurrothen Himmel sehn;
Berg auf und nieder muß er gehn,
Bis daß er sie gefunden.

Der arme Pilger! So wie er,
Geh' ich zur Frühlingszeit umher
Um Birke, Buch' und Erle;
Des Mayen Wunder seh' ich nicht;
Was aber, ach! was mir gebricht,
Ist mehr als eine Perle.

Was mir gebricht, was ich verlohr,
Was ich zum höchsten Gut erkohr,
Ist Lieb' in treuem Herzen.
Vergebens wall' ich auf und ab;
Doch find' ich einst ein kühles Grab,
Das endet alle Schmerzen.

La perla

Al temps de primavera, un home caminava
a través de matossars, camps, arreu,
al voltant de bedolls, faigs i verns;
els arbres eren tots verds a la llum de maig,
les flors al dessota no les veia pas;
ell cercava la seva perla.

La perla era el seu bé més preuat,
per ella havia navegat creuant el mar
i molt havia sofert;
amb ella havia esperat trobar reconfort a la vida,
l’havia guardat al seu pit i sovint
l’havia defensat contra els lladres.

Ara la cercava amb penes i gemecs:
el van adreçar a un clar rierol
i dins d’ell les mòlleres daurades;
però el rierol a la llum del sol
no fou cap ajut, ni tampoc la dansa dels peixos,
ell cercava la seva perla.

I així no parava de cercar-la
i no era feliç a la vida,
a les matinades ja no veia
el cel color de porpra;
havia d’anar amunt i avall de les muntanyes
fins trobar-la.

Pobre pelegrí! Així com ell 
jo també, a primavera, erro
al voltant de bedolls, faigs i verns;
no veig la meravella del mes de maig,
però, ai! El que em manca
és més que una perla.

El que em manca, el que vaig perdre,
el que per a mi era el bé més preuat,
és l’amor d’un cor fidel.
Endebades erro amunt i avall,
un dia però trobaré una freda tomba
que posarà fi als meus sofriments.
