Elk greintje rust is mij ontgleden, Ik drijf maar rond op wilde vloed; Eén enkel oord slechts geeft mij vrede, Alleen de rustplaats doet mij goed. Ook als de winden aak'lig zoeven, En koud de regen ons kastijdt, Wil ik toch daar veel liever toeven Dan in de onbestendigheid. Want zoals dromen spoorloos zweven, En een de ander snel verdrijft, Speelt met zichzelf het dwaze leven, Een elk komt op, geen enkel blijft. Nooit wil de valse hoop ontbreken, Nooit ben 'k van vrees en last berooid, De eeuwig stommen, eeuwig bleken Beloven en versagen nooit. Niet wek ik hen door luide schreden In hun diepdonk're eenzaamheid. Zij weten niet wat 'k heb geleden, Zijn niet geroerd door hoe 'k nog lijd.
