Zum Donaustrom, zur Kaiserstadt
Geh' ich in Bangigkeit:
Denn was das Leben Schönes hat,
[Entschwindet]1 weit und weit.

Die Berge [weichen]2 allgemach,
Mit ihnen [Thal]3 und Fluß;
Der Kühe Glocken läuten nach,
Und Hütten nicken Gruß.

Was starrt dein Auge thränenfeucht
Hinaus in blaue Fern'?
Ach, dorten weilt ich, unerreicht,
Frey unter Freyen gern!

Wo Liebe noch und Treue gilt,
Da öffnet sich das Herz;
Die Frucht an ihren Strahlen schwillt,
Und strebet Himmelwärts.

Terugweg
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)  after the German (Deutsch)
Naar de Donau toe, naar de keizerstad
Ga ik bevreesd, beducht;
Want wat het leven aan moois bevat
Wijkt verder steeds terug.

De bergen schuiven langzaam weg,
En mét hen dal en stroom;
De koeienbellen sterven weg,
En hutten groeten vroom.

Wat staart je oog, betraand naar 't lijkt,
In de verte, blauw en vaag?
Ach, daar verbleef ik, onbereikt,
Vrij onder vrijen, graag!

Waar liefde nog en trouw ook geldt,
Dáár zich het hart ontsluit;
Bestraald door hen de vrucht daar zwelt,
En schiet ten hemel uit.
