Tu, caro, fido liuto, quante notti d'estate, fino al sorgere del mattino, ho vegliato con te! Nelle valli si fa di nuovo notte, il tramonto splende ancora appena, ma coloro che allora vegliavano con noi, sono morti da tempo. Che cosa vogliamo cantare ora, qui nella solitudine, se tutti se ne sono andati, quelli che si rallegravano del nostro canto? Vogliamo cantare lo stesso! C'è tanto silenzio nel mondo; chi sa, i canti arrivano forse fino alle stelle. Chi sa, i morti forse lassù mi ascoltano, e aprono piano le porte per prenderci con sé.
