La trista pace è durata a lungo, siamo stati separati, mia buona spada! Nel frattempo io ho assaggiato il vino in cantina, e tu pendevi arrugginita e solitaria, appesa al muro. Questo e quel vino io assaggiavo, intanto si asciugava il sangue su di te. Finalmente è divampata l'ardente battaglia, mia spada, ed è venuto il tuo momento. Io dò il filo lucente del tuo suono, canta ora il sibilo di morte, nella nebbia della polvere risuona il tuo compito, noi abbiamo diviso, cara spada, le gioie. Nel mosto ribollente, mio assetato acciaio, dissetati, assaggia questo e quel cuore; mentre tu assaggi il sangue rosso, mi si arrugginisce la gola per la sete.

Ai verdi segnali, alle guance rosse, agli allegri musicanti sono andato appresso, di taverna in taverna, per qunato mi ricordi. Sul colbacco ora porto i ramoscelli verdi, guance rosse, e batto il nemico nel modo migliore, quando il suono del cannone fa il concerto intorno.

Qui giace a terra la schiera dei nemici, giace nel suo sangue rosso sangue. Come l'ha colpito duramente, come l'ha colpito bene l'ussaro veloce! Qui giacciono, ah! Pallidi e rossi, tremano e barcollano ancora... le loro anime sul pennacchio, giacciono morti. E se ancora risuona il richiamo del trombettiere, asciuga la sua spada sulla criniera, e ancora saltella lieto il suo cavallo con gli zoccoli rossi.
