Når vildgåsen larmer Valborgnat,
hvem lægger sig da til at sove?
Da vandrer man ensomt med Dug på Hat
langs Fjord og knoppede Skove.

Derude stråler en Stjerne så stor,
at helt den fylder mit Øje;
den samme Stjerne for vist jeg tror,
jeg så over Barndommens Høje.

Og Vibeskriget rækker så langt,
dog længere Længslerne rækker.
Hvor bliver ens Hjerte bitterlig trangt,
når Klyden i Majnatten trækker!

Det pipper i Mos, og det pibler i Græs,
det sprætter i hældende Kroner;
der kommer en Duft fra det yderste Næs
af tusinde smaa Anemoner.

Så ensomt bræger det spæde Lam
på Bakken langt i det fjerne,
og Frøerne kvækker fra Pyt og Dam,
som sang det fra Stjerne til Stjerne.

Nuit de mai

Quand les oies sauvages cacardent dans la nuit de Valborg1,
qui va se mettre au lit pour dormir ?
C'est alors que l'on va solitaire, de la rosée sur le chapeau,
au long des golfes et dans les forêts bourgeonnantes.

Là-bas une étoile brille si fort
qu'elle emplit complètement mes yeux ;
je crois bien que c'est la même étoile
que celle que je voyais sur les collines de mon enfance.

Et si le cri du vanneau dure longtemps,
les regrets durent encore plus longtemps.
Comme  un cœur se sent amèrement à l'étroit
quand passe l'avocette dans la nuit de mai !

Cela pépie dans la mousse et suinte dans l'herbe,
cela pousse dans les cimes penchées ;
de l'extrémité de la pointe vient le parfum
de mille petites anémones.

Le tendre agneau bêle ainsi,  esseulé
tout au loin sur la colline
et les grenouilles coassent dans les mares et les étangs,
comme si les étoiles chantaient aux étoiles.

1 La nuit du 30 avril au 1 mai était appelée nuit de Valborg dans les pays scandinaves, c'était une fête de printemps au cours de laquelle on faisait brûler des feux de joie.
