Herbstlied

Nun die Mutter schlafen will,
Werden auch die Kindlein still;
All' die Vöglein groß und klein
Huschen schweigend durch den Hain.

Frosch und Grille sind verstummt,
Nicht ein einzig Bienchen summt;
Selbst das Bächlein rieselt nur 
Heimlich durch die Wiesenflur.

Und damit die Mutter nicht 
Blenden soll das helle Licht,
Wogt und wallt als leichter Flor
Nebel aus dem Tal empor.

Wie sie nun im Traum gewiegt
Schlummernd vor den Kindern liegt,
Deckt der Baum zu sanfter Ruh'
Sie mit goldnem Laube zu.

Autumn song

Now that Mother wishes to sleep,
The children, too, become quiet;
All the birds, large and small,
Flit silently through the grove.

Frog and cricket have fallen mute,
Not a single bee hums;
Even the brooklet only ripples
Secretly through the meadow.

And in order that Mother might not
Be blinded by the bright light,
Up from the valley fog surges
And undulates like delicate gauze.

As she now lies, lulled into dreams,
Slumbering in front of her children,
The tree, for her gentle rest,
Covers her with golden leaves.
