Daß ich Dich liebe, schafft mir Pein
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
  Daß ich Dich liebe, schafft mir Pein,
Vergebens wünsch' ich's Dir zu klagen!
Der Quell springt murmelnd aus dem Stein,
Das volle Herz weiß nichts zu sagen.

  Jed' Vöglein singt sein Liedchen aus
Und Liebe tönt von allen Zweigen;
Die meine drückt kein Wörtlein aus,
Ich kann nur lieben Dich und schweigen.

  Kann Dich nur halten innig still,
In's Aug' Dir seh'n mit heil'gen Schauern
Und beten, daß sie ewig will,
Die Pein, die selig stumme, dauern.

About the headline (FAQ)

View text with all available footnotes

Confirmed with Robert Schweichel, "Solange. Erzählung aus der Westschweiz" in Über Land und Meer. Allgemeine Illustriete Zeitung, Sechzehnter Band, No. 48, Stuttgart, August 1866, page 762.

Note: the poem occurs twice in the story, and the first time, a character is reading it from an old calendar, so it may be a ditty that was popular at the time of publication, or it may be by Schweichel himself.
