Es zittert in die dunkle Fluth
Des Sommers heißer Mittagschein.

Ein Wasserröslein still erblüht
Im See, so einsam, duftigroth,
Ein Schwan so einsam ihn durchzieht
Und singt sein Lied vor seinem Tod!

By the lake

Solitary, in the deep forest, rests
The lake with a twilight-blue glow.
Into the dark waters trembles
The hot noon-day radiance of summer.

A little water lily quietly blooms
In the lake, so solitary, red and scented;
So lonely, a swan glides through the lake
And sings its song before its death!
