Liebesglück
Language: German (Deutsch)
Geh' ich von meinem Liebchen
Nach Haus' in stiller Nacht
Und denk, wie ich so selig
Den Abend zugebracht,
Wie ich bei ihr gesessen
So traulich und so nah,
Und wie ihr schönes Auge
So freundlich zu mir sah:
Dann wogt in meinem Herzen
Unendlich süße Lust,
Die Welt möcht' ich umarmen
Und drücken an die Brust,
Und möchte laut es rufen
Hin in die stille Nacht,
Wie wonnig meine Liebe,
Wie reich sie mich gemacht.
Doch manchmal in dem Jubel,
Da fällt mir bange ein,
Der Glücklichen auf Erden,
Nicht viele sollen's seyn.
Dann bete ich verstohlen
Zum Sternenhimmel hin:
O werde mir nicht böse,
Daß ich so glücklich bin!

Love's joy
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
When in the quiet night I go
Home after visiting my darling,
And think about how blissfully
I spent the evening,
How I sat beside her
So familiarly and so near,
And how her beautiful eyes
Looked at me so amiably:
Then infinitely sweet joy
Surges in my heart,
I could embrace the whole world
And press it to my breast,
And I would like to call it loudly
Out into the quiet night,
How blissfully happy, how rich
My love has made me.
But sometimes in the rejoicing,
I remember anxiously
That there are not many
Of those who are happy upon earth.
Then I pray surreptitiously
Up to the star-filled sky:
Oh, do not become angry with me
That I am so happy!
