Den Kranichzug seh' ich gen Süden schweben,
Der Wald wie Gold! Wie traumesstill die Welt!

Wie traumesschön! -- Ist schön nicht Vollenthüllung,
Des ewig jungen Lebens Ziel und Sein?
Ja, du bist schön, o Herbst, du beut'st Erfüllung,
Fest blick ich dir in Aug' und Herz hinein.

I see the sedge of cranes floating southwards,
The forest like gold! How dreamily silent the world!

How dreamily beautiful! Is not full revelation beautiful,
The goal and being of eternally young life?
Yes, you are beautiful, oh autumn, you offered fulfilment,
I gaze steadfastly into your eyes and your heart.
