from Volkslieder (Folksongs)
Translation by Josef Wenzig (1807 - 1876)

Die Verlassene
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Czech (Čeština)
Neulich schwamm ein flinkes Gänschen
Auf dem klaren Teiche hin,
Als ich von dem Heißgeliebten
Abschied nahm mit trübem Sinn.

Hinter jene schwarzen Berge,
Hinter Böhmens Gränze dort,
Führten sie mir treuem Mädchen
Meinen holden Jüngling fort.

Wär' ich nur ein flinkes Gänschen,
Schwämm' ich nicht im Teiche hin;
Hinter meinem Schatz bergüber
Flög' ich schnell mit frohem Sinn.
