Man strebt, die Flamme zu verhehlen,
Die bei gefühlvoll edlen Seelen
Sich unbemerkt ins Herze stiehlt;
Geheimnisvoll schließt man die Lippen,
Jedoch verrät sich bald mit Blicken,
Wie sehr man, ach, die Liebe fühlt.
  
Ein Blick sagt mehr als tausend Worte,
Ein Blick entriegelt oft die Pforte
Der lang verhehlten Leidenschaft;
Er zeigt dem Teuren, den ich liebe,
Des Herzens reine, zarte Triebe
Und gibt ihm auszuharren Kraft.

Men tracht de vuurgloed te verhelen
Die bij gevoel’ge zielen, vele,
Onopgemerkt het hart in sluipt;
Mysterieus sluit men de lippen,
Maar dra verraadt zich toch met blikken
Hoezeer in ‘t hart, ach, liefde kruipt.
 
Een blik zegt meer dan duizend woorden,
Een blik ontgrendelt vaak de poorten
Van ’n stil hartstochtelijk bestaan.
Hij toont de man van mijn verlangen
Mijn zuiv’re, zachte harteprangen
En geeft hem kracht om door te gaan.
