Bergmanns Ständchen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Wieder über'm Berggetrümmer,
Steht der Mond, so mild wie sonst,
Und beglänzt mit weißem Schimmer
Jetzt das Häuschen, wo du wohnst.

Keines leisen Schalles Wehen,
Rings nur Schweigen wie im Grab,
Und die goldnen Sterne sehen
Auf mich Einsamen herab.

Hörst du nicht der Laute Klingen,
Das zu deinem Fenster dringt,
Und auf leisen Aetherschwingen
Meinen stillen Gruß dir bringt.

Lausche doch vom weichen Pfühle
Nieder eh' der Sänger schied,
Denn vor'm lauten Taggewühle
Flüchtet scheu der Sehnsucht Lied.

Ach, in öden Bergesschlünden
Muß ich bergen meinen Schmerz,
Kann es nur dem Mond verkünden
Wie nach dir sich sehnt mein Herz.

Muß aufs Neu' nach Erzen schürfen
Wenn die Sonne steigt empor,
Und nicht meine Klagen dürfen
Dringen an der Menschen Ohr.

So durch ewigfinstre Schächte
Geh' ich ohne Strahl und Schein,
Lächelst du in meine Nächte
Nicht als Hoffnungsstern hinein.

Miner's serenade
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Again over the mountainous rubble
The moon stands as mildly as usual,
And with a white shimmer it now
Illuminates the little house in which you live.

There is no wafting of any quiet sound,
All about is only silence like in the grave,
And the golden stars look down
Upon me, the solitary one.

Do you not hear the sounds of my lute
Rising up toward your window,
And, upon quiet ethereal wings,
Bringing you my quiet greeting.

Hearken from your soft pillow
To the singer below before he departs,
For from the loud turmoil of the day
The song of yearning flees shyly.

Ah, in desolate mountain caverns
I must bury my pain,
I can confide only to the moon
How my heart yearns for you.

When the sun arises
I must again dig for ore,
And my laments must not
Penetrate to the ears of mankind.

Thus through eternally dark shafts
I walk without beam and gleam,
Unless as a star of hope
You smile into my nights.
