Parfois, pour me fermer les yeux, Ma sœur me chante une romance, Un air très simple, un air très vieux, Mais ou gémit ma peine immense. C'est un air du pays perdu: Sa douceur m'est parfois amère Et je dois l'avoir entendu Dans mon berceau, près de ma mère. Il me rend la tiédeur des bois, L'idylle bleue et parfumée, Et j'ai dû l'entendre autrefois, Quand j'aimais ma première aimée. Mais toujours quand le ciel est noir, Quand je m'accoude à la fenêtre, Ma sœur me chante, chaque soir, Cet air, qui m'a bercé peut-être. Elle chante très lentement, À la fois pensive et ravie, Et dans le vieil air allemand Je sens pleurer toute ma vie.
