Que j'ai cueillies aux haies des prairies
En souriant.
Mais sans doute j'aurai toujours aux doigts
La trace des épines d'autrefois,
Quand elles  seront flétries.

Je sais des chansons d'Engaddi
Que je fredonne par les routes
Pour la Douce qui m'a plu,
Mais sans doute
Je saurai toujours les airs de jadis,
Quand elle ne m'aimera plus.

J'ai la barbe blonde
Comme un mendiant de Tripoli,
Qui porte ses romances par le monde,
Mais peut-être qu'aux mignonnes rondes,
Où les elfes et les fillettes se penchent
Avec les fous et les lorelys,
On dira toujours mes virolais jolis,
Quand j'aurai la barbe blanche
Comme des lis.
