Zuflucht

Hinterm Elternhaus am kleinen Weiher,
dicht umdunkelt rings von Weidenruten,
breitet eine Pappel ihre schwanken
Zweige nickend über Schilf und Fluten.

Seltsam heimlich ist's an diesem Orte;
schon, als Knabe hab ich hier gesessen
und mich ausgeweint im Schutz der hohen
Binsen und mein junges Leid vergessen.

Wieder starr' ich in das schwarze Wasser,
aber keine Träne will mir kommen;
nur die schwanken Pappelzweige seh ich
dort sich spiegeln, winkend und verschwommen.

Refuge

Derrière la maison de mes parents près d'un petit étang,
enserré sous l'ombre dense des verges d'un saule,
un peuplier étend ses rameaux hésitants,
se penchant au-dessus des roseaux et de l'onde.

Ce lieu est étrangement familier ;
déjà enfant je me suis assis ici
et j'y ai pleuré tout mon soûl à l'abri des grands joncs, 
et oublié les souffrances de ma jeunesse.

Je fixe à nouveau l'eau noire,
mais plus aucune larme ne me vient ;
je ne vois que les rameaux élancés du peuplier
s'y refléter encore, s'agitant confusément.
