Jüngst sass ich am Grab der Trauten allein
Es schwirrten die Saiten im Klageton drein
In Tränen verstummten die Lieder.
Marie! Marie! Auf ewig dahin.
Was ist ohne dich so ein Leben Gewinn.
Wann seh’ ich dich einstens wohl wieder?
 
Ein leises Gelispel stört bald meine Ruh:
Verklärt trat ein weiblicher Schatten herzu,
Durcbebte mit Angst meine Glieder.
’Was fürchtest du Trauter? Kennst du mich nicht mehr?’
Lass ab von dem Klageton ! Freu’ dich vielmehr!
Bald, Lieber, bald sehn wir uns wieder!’
 
Und lächelnd entschwand sie dem starrenden Blick,
Doch liess sie mir Ruhe im Herzen zurück
Und sandte mir Duldung hernieder.
Nun ende, mein Stündlein, ich fürchte mich nicht!
Hier ist es so finster, dort ist es so licht!
Dort seh’ ich die Traute ja wieder!

Pas zat ik aan ’t graf van mijn liefste alleen,
De snaren, hun klagen klonk droef om mij heen,
Van zang moest ik schreiende afzien.
Maria! Maria! Voor altijd van d’ aard.
Wat is zonder jou zulk een leven nog waard?
Wanneer zal ik ooit nog jou weerzien?
 
Een heel zacht gelispel wekt onrust in mij:
In licht trad een vrouw’lijke schim naderbij,
Van angst is mijn lichaam gaan beven.
‘Wat vrees je, mijn liefste? Ken jij me niet meer?
Houd op met je klaaggezang! Blij zijn past meer!
Mijn liefste, het duurt nog maar even!’
 
Mild lachend ontvlood zij mijn blik en mijn smart,
Maar liet bij mij achter weer rust in mijn hart,
Wat komt zal ik kalm tegemoet zien.
Nu eindig, mijn uurtje, mijn angst is gezwicht!
Hier is het zo donker, daar is het zo licht!
Daar zal ik mijn liefste, ja, weerzien!
