by Hanns Johst (1890 - 1978)

Herbstnacht
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Auf den Schultern verschämter Buchen ruht
Des braunen Abends lächelndes Gesicht.
Und eine Wolke -- wie im Übermut
Den welken Tag von dunklen Zweigen bricht.

Um eine Fichte kreisen fröstelnd Sterne;
Die Turmuhr zwang sie in das Zeitgehäuse.
Den Schlaf der Giebel und den Traum der Ferne
Umflattern schwarze Fledermäuse . . .

Confirmed with Hanns Johst, Lieder der Sehnsucht, München: Albert Langen, 1924, page 28.
