Herbstnacht
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Auf den Schultern verschämter Buchen ruht
Des braunen Abends lächelndes Gesicht.
Und eine Wolke -- wie im Übermut
Den welken Tag von dunklen Zweigen bricht.
Um eine Fichte kreisen fröstelnd Sterne;
Die Turmuhr zwang sie in das Zeitgehäuse.
Den Schlaf der Giebel und den Traum der Ferne
Umflattern schwarze Fledermäuse . . .

Autumn night
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Upon the shoulders of shamefaced beech trees rests
The brown evening’s smiling visage.
And a cloud -- as if in high spirits
Breaks the wilted day from dark branches.
About a fir tree shivering stars revolve;
The tower clock forced them into the casing of time.
Black bats flutter about
The sleep of the gables and the dream of the distance . . .
