Wirklich, wirklich bist du schon verschwunden,
Meines Lebens holder, schöner Mai?
Eh' ich noch mir einen Kranz gewunden,
Ist die Zeit der Blumen schon vorbei?

War es das, was ich von Liebe träumte,
Als ich in der Hoffnung Morgenstrahl
jedes Pflänzchen pflegte, wie es keimte,
war ich glücklich - ach, zum letzten Mal!

Laß doch Herz dein ungestümes Pochen!
Lächle ruhig, traurendes Gesicht!
Blumen, wie wir sie im Traum gebrochen,
Solche Blumen blüh'n auf Erden nicht.
