C’est une allée étroite et massive de buis.
Le plus vif soleil meurt dans ses épais rideaux
Et dès l’entrée on sent, sur le front et le dos,
Une opaque fraîcheur de caverne ou de puits.

Il y fait presque froid, il y fait presque nuit ;
Tant d’ombre coule au pied des grands murs végétaux
Qu’on s’étonne d’y voir, comme entre deux linteaux,
Onduler, bleu ruban, un peu d’azur qui luit.

Et soudain la paroi verte et profonde s’ouvre,
Et par la brèche, au bas du vieux parc, on découvre
Un paysage fin comme un fond de portrait :

C’est l’Anjou, ses coteaux légers, lourds de leurs vignes,
Sa Loire lente où dort la plaine aux longues lignes,
Et son beau ciel, si tendre à voir qu’on en mourrait…
