Anguished verses, painful rhymes, tender memories, anger and indignation, you sadly flow from my heart, from my poor heart that sighs in vain, go, messengers of love, go where dreary Hunger roams about; where one poor person languishes and another is dying; go to the gallows where a martyr is executed. And, if sometimes a well-fed and self-indulgent critic tries to attack you, tell him: We were born in the darkness, we are the cry of the buried people, who toil for you and suffer underground, and often die without revenge.
