Die Abendröte
Language: German (Deutsch)
Die Abendröte färbt die Flur;
Und still und freundlich gatten
Zum Feierkleide der Natur,
Sich heitres Licht und Schatten.
So sanft verschmelzt in unsrer Brust
Sich leiser Schmerz und stille Lust,
Zur schönen Lebensmischung.

Das ganz Leben dämmert nur;
Das Licht ward uns verschleiert;
Und [fernher]1 strahlt des Lichtes Spur,
Das still in Osten feiert.
Sanft fällt des Tages Auge zu;
Gesätes Leben ist die Ruh,
Die zur Vollendung führet.

Notes for Himmel's setting: in stanza 1, line 6, the score has "Sich leiser Schmerz in unsrer Brust", which is probably an editor's mistake

1 Himmel: "froher"
