by Carlo Pepoli, Conte (1796 - 1881)

La veglia
Language: Italian (Italiano)
Chiudi il ciglio, Elisa bella,
non destarti che all' Aurora;
ma ne' sogni almen talora
deh sovvengati di me!

Al chiaror d'incerta luna,
altuo ostello io veglio accanto,
e versando amaro pianto
al mio Amor chied' io mercè.

Sogna, o cara, il bel momento
che languendo io ti guardai,
che tremando io ti baciai ...
sogna, o cara, la mia fè!

Apri il ciglio, o Elisa bella,
già dal mar spuntò l'Aurora ...
ma nel giorno almen talora
deh sovvengati di me!

Confirmed with Carlo Pepoli, Prose e versi, Bd. 4, London, 1836.

Note: when Benedict's song repeats parts of the last stanza, the following is inserted before the last line: "pensa cara alla mia fè"
