Rückschau und Aufblick
„I bitt', Herr Hauptmann, bitt recht schön,
o lassen S' mich auf Urlaub geh'n,
auf Urlaub gang i gar so gern,
auf Urlaub gang i gern!“
Vom Liszt dann empfing ich den Weihekuss;
„I bitt' dich, Herrgott, bitt recht schön,

Review and Outlook
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I was born in Linz upon the Danube,
where I was brought up as a suckling baby.
My mother was happy when I could hum the melody
of the song with which she put me to sleep:
"Please, captain, please,
let me go on vacation,
I'd like to go on holiday so much,
I'd really like to leave."
My second birth was in Vienna,
where they discovered that I was a composer.
The kiss of ordination I got from Liszt,
and from then on, musical work was a real enjoyment for me.
Bruckner, my teacher, says that everything passes away,
only Counterpoint, my child, has persistance.
The fee I paid for tuition, it was not spent in vain
with my masters of the art!
Music told me a lot of dear things,
so that my heart has stayed warm all these years.
For that I am grateful and shall praise
the captain there in heaven, and ask him:
"Please, captain, please,
don't let me go on vacation yet!
My work has never repented me so far;
there is still time to go on holiday later!"
Note: the composition is dated "3. Dez. 1927", which was the composer's 50th birthday.
