Baisers sauvages de la ronce,
Insectes altérés et cruels de nos bois.

Plus de vains rêves, plus de saintes fiançailles,
Je me suis trop créé de stériles douleurs.
Dans les ténèbres des broussailles
J'oublierai l'île vierge et ses plaines de fleurs.

Ah ! Comment croire encore au songe magnifique
Car le brutal enfant vient de me ressaisir
Et sa vision séraphique

Thorny wild roses tear at my fingers,
I taste the brambles’ savage kisses,
And am the captive of thirsty and cruel insects.
 
No more vain dreams, no more sacred vows,
I have created too much useless pain for myself.
In the darkness of the forest, 
I will forget the virgin island and its fields of flowers.
 
Ah! How can I still believe in the magnificent dream,
For brutal Cupid comes to ensnare me again,
And this heavenly vision
Vanishes in the ardent breath of my desire.
