In stiller, ernster Klarheit
Steht der Mond am Himmelsrund,
Von leichten Nebeln bleich umweht
Erglänzt der Erde Grund
Und strahlet wieder seinen Schimmer
Mit fahlem, gauklerischem Flimmer.
Wie Elfen, tanzend im Gefild',
So wallt der Schleier hin,
Der um den Saum des Waldes quillt,
Des Abends Kunstgespinn,
Als würden tausend helle Wellen
Im schmucken Thale silbern schwellen.
Es liegt die Welt in tiefer Ruh'
Als wie ein schlummernd Kind,
Es drückt ihr sacht die Augen zu
Der linde Abendwind,
Und hold zu ihr herniederneigen
Sich süßer Friede,
Tiefes Schweigen.

En una silent i greu claredat
la lluna és a la volta del cel,
empal·lidida per una boira lleugera,
il·lumina la superfície de la terra
i fa brillar de nou el seu esclat
amb un esmorteït, fantasmagòric llampurneig.
Com elfs ballant als camps,
així s’agiten les ombres
que sorgeixen a la vora del bosc
del fantasieig del capvespre,
com si milers d’ones lluminoses
es formessin argentades a la formosa vall.
El món jau en un profund repòs
com un infant que dorm,
tanca lentament els ulls
el suau vent del capvespre,
i, encisadors, davallen
una dolça pau,
un profund silenci.
