Am Strand
Language: German (Deutsch)
Es läuft die Welle hin
zum weißen Strand;
seltsame Kunde trägt
sie mit ans Land

von Wiegen und Wogen
in Welten weit,
von Träumen und Sehnen
vergangener Zeit.

Sie sprüht hernieder
kristall'nes Schäumen
und kühlt die Glieder
nach heißen Träumen.

Über glatten
Kiesel und Sand
glänzt's wie Silber,
gaukeln Schatten,

tönt ein Laut,
den sie gebracht
aus fernem Land
seit gestern Nacht.

Worte der Liebe
hat sie erlauscht,
die dürstenden, jungen
Herzen berauscht.

Nun bäumt sie sich wilder,
zerbrandet am Stein;
da glitzert's wie Perlen
im Abendrotschein.

Verstummt die Weise
in nächtlichem Schweigen,
nur Murmeln noch leise
und zärtlich Neigen.

Note: the ONB has three handwritten scores of Müller-Hermann's op. 32 no. 1; copy 1 & 2 use Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Vorfrühling, while in the third copy the title "Vorfrühling" is struck out and replaced by "Am Strand". The text is not struck out, but under it is written in red ink another text, perhaps by the composer, as shown above. This title and first line matches the entry in the 1939 Musikalisch-literarischer Monatsbericht published by Hofmeister for op. 32 no. 1, so we have included it in the opus but have added the letter 'a' to distinguish it from the other text.

Musical settings (art songs, Lieder, mélodies, (etc.), choral pieces, and other vocal works set to this text), listed by composer (not necessarily exhaustive):

  • by Johanna Müller-Hermann (1878 - 1941), "Am Strand", op. 32 (Drei Lieder) no. 1a, published 1939 [ high voice and piano ], Wien, Universal Edition; there is another text used with this music in manuscript form, so we have added the letter 'a' to distinguish the two versions [sung text checked 1 time]
