Drop upon drop falls From the mossy linden tree, And there is a melodic echo From the pond’s rim of rocky crags. Into the joyful thoughts of springtime, Hark! what a solemn tone weaves itself: For you as well barriers are set, Soon you shall have lived long enough! Drop upon drop falls; Thus day after day flows away, And not one of them returns, However much your dream may wish it. Alas! the blissful hours of childhood, Alas! the merriment of youth, Everything, everything has vanished, Including the best years of manhood! Drop upon drop falls; But in the east it grows bright, And the Sabbath again beautifully Reveals to me its comforting visage, And in the sun the droplets Now sparkle so brightly and purely, As before God someday, oh bliss! My life shall be transfigured.
