Regennacht
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
  Tropfen fällt um Tropfen nieder
Vom bemoosten Lindenbaum,
Und melodisch hallt es wieder
Von des Weihers Felsensaum.
  In die frohen Lenzgedanken,
Horch! welch ernster Ton sich webt:
Dir auch sind gestezt die Schranken,
Bald hast du genug gelebt!

  Tropfen fällt um Tropfen nieder;
So verrinnet Tag für Tag,
Und nicht einer kehret wieder,
Wie's dein Traum auch wünschen mag.
  Ach! der Kindheit Wonnestunden,
Ach! der Jugend Heiterkeit,
Alles, Alles ist entschwunden,
Sammt der besten Manneszeit!

  Tropfen fällt um Tropfen nieder;
Doch im Osten wird es licht,
Und der Sabbat zeigt mir wieder
Hold sein tröstend Angesicht,
  Und die Tropfen in der Sonne
Blitzend nun so hell und rein,
Wie vor Gott dereinst, o Wonne!
Wird verklärt mein Leben sein.

Rainy night
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
  Drop upon drop falls
From the mossy linden tree,
And there is a melodic echo
From the pond’s rim of rocky crags.
  Into the joyful thoughts of springtime,
Hark! what a solemn tone weaves itself:
For you as well barriers are set,
Soon you shall have lived long enough!

  Drop upon drop falls;
Thus day after day flows away,
And not one of them returns,
However much your dream may wish it.
  Alas! the blissful hours of childhood,
Alas! the merriment of youth,
Everything, everything has vanished,
Including the best years of manhood!

  Drop upon drop falls;
But in the east it grows bright,
And the Sabbath again beautifully
Reveals to me its comforting visage,
  And in the sun the droplets
Now sparkle so brightly and purely,
As before God someday, oh bliss!
My life shall be transfigured.
