Mit Singen, mit Klingen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Mit Singen, mit Klingen
Zum Städtchen ging es ein,
Mit Klingen und mit Singen
Muß auch geschieden sein.
Mit Trommeln und Pfeifen
Und lustig Mund und Aug',
Und möcht' viel lieber meinen --
Das ist Soldatenbrauch!
Am Rathaus, am Brunnen
Viel Leute stehn umher,
Dabei manch schmuckes Schätzchen --
Ob meins darunter wär'?
Es schweifet, zu suchen,
Mein Blick im Kreise rings
Da kommandiert der Hauptmann:
Gestanden! Augen links!
Herr Tambour, Herr Tambour,
Nun rühr' die Trommel scharf,
Damit mein armes Herze
Sich selbst nicht hören darf.
Trompeten erklingen,
Hinaus zum Tor es geht;
Ade! Herzallerliebste --
Der Gruß im Wind verweht!

With singing, with ringing
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
With singing, with ringing
We entered the town,
With ringing and with singing
We must also take leave.
With drums and pipes
And cheerful mouth and eyes,
And would much rather love --
That is soldiers’ custom!
At City Hall, at the well
Many people are standing around,
Among them is many an attractive darling --
Might mine be among them?
My gaze roves about, seeking
in the circle [--]
Then the captain commands:
Attention! Eyes left!
Drummer, drummer
Now beat the drum sharply,
So that my poor heart
May not hear itself.
Trumpets ring out,
Out through the gate we go;
Adieu! Beloved of my heart --
The greeting is gone with the wind!
