L'autel gît sous la ronce et l'herbe enseveli ;
Et la source sans nom qui goutte à goutte tombe
D'un son plaintif emplit la solitaire combe.
C'est la Nymphe qui pleure un éternel oubli.

L'inutile miroir que ne ride aucun pli
A peine est effleuré par un vol de colombe
Et la lune, parfois, qui du ciel noir surplombe,
Seule, y reflète encore un visage pâli.

De loin en loin, un pâtre errant s'y désaltère.
Il boit, et sur la dalle antique du chemin
Verse un peu d'eau resté dans le creux de sa main.

Il a fait, malgré lui, le geste héréditaire,
Et ses yeux n'ont pas vu sur le cippe romain
Le vase libatoire auprès de la patère.
