den lille By med sin ene Gade,
som laa og kogte i Sommersol,
hvor Græsset grodde i Fred og Frihed,
hvor Hunde dovned, og Haner gol.

Hvem fatted vel mine Dages Kummer,
hvem fatted vel mine Nætters Savn,
den Sorgens Ynde, den stille Høihed,
som bar dit Væsen og gav dig Navn?

Dog hvad var Verden, den store Verden,
hvor tidt den fristed min unge Trang,
hvad var den vel, naar du sorgfuld vandred
din tause, ensomme Drømmegang!

Ja, om jeg stod som en Gud paa Bjerget
og skuéd ind i dens Herlighed,
jeg vilde længes, jeg vilde længes
at synke for dine Fødder ned.

O, stolt Gulnare! — Du skjænked aldrig
din Pages Ydmyghed Smilets Løn,
men jeg har hulket for dig i Nætter
og knælet raadløs i Graad og Bøn.
