De koelte neigt den avond over;
en waar ik wijle, uit zwoelen dag
in 't zwenken van 't gezonken loover,
voel 'k, in den donkerenden toover
van licht en schaâuw door 't trage rag
der blaêren, 't sterven van mijn lach.

Ik wacht. Ik heb de stille pijne
dat ik den heelen dag u wacht.
En, onder 't huivrend avond-kwijnen,
voel 'k om mijn mond de strakke lijnen
waar, wijl ik nóg te hopen tracht,
het sterven van mijn hope in lacht...
