«Var än du fjärran är, så lyss till suset
av granen skuggande din moders hydda!« ---
Du helga träd, du alltid sommarprydda,
som stiger himmelssträvande ur gruset,

jag hörde dina ord. Av hjärtat tydda,
de ryckt mig ur det vilda levnadsruset
tillbaka hit till det tysta fadershuset ---
mer tyst än förr: dess åbor äro flydda.

Här vill jag nu vid enslig härd mig sätta
och lyssna, när utur min barndomssaga
du viskar ljuva bilder i mitt minne.

Men är det vinden, som förskyller detta?
Jag hör den gamla granen endast klaga
och hör dess klagans eko i mitt sinne.
