by Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769 - 1860)

An die Nachtigall
Language: German (Deutsch)
Süße Klage,
Kleine Nachtigall,
Klang der Nächte, sage,
Wer gab dir den Schall?

Fielst von Sternen
Du, ein Engeltraum,
Daß wir Sehnsucht lernen
Nach dem lichten Raum?

Wurdest Leier
Für der Liebe Leid,
Singst der Seelen Feier
Nun im Federkleid?

Philomele,
Holdes Himmelskind,
Zarte Geisterseele,
Wie die Engel sind!

O der Herzen
Goldner Leierklang!
Klinge, Lust der Schmerzen,
Klinge laut, Gesang!

Klinge, Liebe,
Klinge, Sehnsucht, drein!
Funkelt, helle Triebe,
Hell wie Sternenschein!

Stimmt Gesänge
Gleich der Nachtigall,
Und im Strom der Klänge
Flutet hin zum All!

Confirmed with Ernst Moritz Arndt, Werke. Teil 1: Gedichte, Berlin u.a. 1912, pages 140-141.
