Wiegelied

Zacht luidt de eenvoudige, oude melodie,
Waarmeê de moeder 't lijdend kindje sust,
Bij elke stroof, zijn melkwit koontje kust,
Hem zoetjes wiegend, dat de pijn ontvliê.

Lief zucht dat lied van liefdeleed en -lust
Door 't stil vertrek; geen, die daar luistre of spiê
Naar 't blanke groepje, dan de vader, die
Zich opricht van de sponde waar hij rust.
 
Zoo zing ook ik mijn leed in slaap, heel zacht.
- ‘Slaap, zoete kindje! woel en ween zoo niet!’
En zeer eentonig klinkt mijn wiegelied.

En niemand luistert, in den duistren nacht,
Naar de oude wijs vol teedren weemoed, dan
Mijn arm ziek kindje, dat niet slapen kan.
