Blank unter den Wolken ein lichtarmer Streif,
Wolken sonst weit, Wolken und Felder.

Im Rasen zwei Pferde, und raufen Gras, 
Blaß spiegelt der Teich.
Bleich wächst die Nacht aus der Erde.

Shining under the clouds a pale streak,
Clouds otherwise far, clouds and fields.

In the turf two horses, and they are tearing at the grass,
The pond pallid in reflecting.
Palely the night grows out of the earth.
