Doch rettend naht ein Engel, und tragt es an das Land, wo bald ein edler Herzog das Mägdlein schlafend fand. O armes Kind, noch zart und klein, was wird dein einstig Schicksal sein? Als Herzogtochter ehrt man die Jungfrau weit und breit. Doch ihre Tugend führet nur Hochmut im Geleit. Von Glanz und Hoheit träumend, von Zepter nur und Kron' - in Wahrheit sich ihr zeiget alsbald ein Königsthron. Doch plötzlich reißt der Schleier, und alles wird bekannt, daß sie ein Fischermädchen und nur aus niedrem Stand.

Sulla spiaggia verdeggiante con lei riposava la madre, quando all'improvviso cadde la bambina nei flutti. Ma per salvare venne un angelo, e la portò in un'altra spiaggia dove presto un nobile duca la trovò addormentata. O povera bimba, così tenera e piccola, quale sarà mai il tuo destino? Come figlia del duca onoravano tutti lei, diventata una bellissima fanciulla. Ma la sua virtù si accompagnava solo a superbia e orgoglio. Sognando splendore e grandezza, solo uno scettro e un trono - in verità le si presentò ben presto un trono regale. Ma all'improvviso cadde il velo, e tutto si venne a sapere, che era figlia di pescatori, del più basso stato.
