Der Ring

Ein fremder Kavalier
Stieg ab vom schwarzen Roß,
Trat in den Königssaal
Mit andern Herren groß.

Derselbe Kavalier
Trug einen Edelstein,
Wie man noch keinen sah,
Von wundersamem Schein.

Ein Stein von hohem Wert
In Königs Krone saß,
Doch schien vor diesem er
Ein mattgeschliffen Glas.

Der König bot ihm Gold,
Er bot ihm Leut' und Land,
Doch lassen wollt' er nicht
Den edlen Diamant.

Der König, des erbost,
Spricht zu dem Hauptmann sein:
"Bringt mir des Mannes Hand
Samt seinem Edelstein!"

Der Hauptmann reckt das Schwert,
Haut nach des Mannes Hand,
Doch statt des Kavaliers
Der Teufel vor ihm stand.

Glut strömt aus seinem Ring,
Zur Hölle wächst der Stein,
Schleußt Burg und König bald
Samt allen Dienern ein.

La bague

Un chevalier étranger
Descendit de son cheval noir,
Entra dans la salle du roi
Avec d'autres grands seigneurs.

Ce même chevalier
Portait une pierre précieuse
D'une beauté que personne n'avait vue,
D'un étrange  éclat.

La pierre de grande valeur,
Enchâssée dans la couronne du roi,
Semblait devant celle-là
Être taillée dans un verre dépoli.

Le roi lui proposa de l'or,
Lui proposa des gens et des terres,
Mais il ne voulait pas céder
Le précieux diamant.

Le roi en colère
Dit à son capitaine :
«Apporte-moi la main de cet homme
Avec sa pierre précieuse !»

Le capitaine tira son épée,
L'abattit sur la main de l'homme,
Mais au lieu du chevalier
Devant lui se tenait le diable.

Un flot incandescent sortit de la bague,
La pierre se transforma en enfer,
Engloutit bientôt le château et le roi
De même que tous ses serviteurs.
