by Gerhard Anton Hermann Gramberg (1772 - 1816)

Die rechte Liebe
Language: German (Deutsch)
Willst du immer frische Liebe,
Die nie darbet, nimmer harrt,
Himmel, nie von Sorgen trübe --
Liebe du die Gegenwart.

Willst du wissen, wie in Schmerzen
Sich die Seele gern erfreut,
O so lieb' in sanftem Herzen
Innig die Vergangenheit.

Jene ruht an deinen Wangen,
Diese schaut mit Sternenblick
Noch im Scheiden voll Verlangen
Auf den Sehnenden zurück.

Doch der Zukunft zu vertrauen,
Wird dem Sterblichen zu schwer;
Nach ihr willst du liebend schauen? --
Ach! sie schaut nicht wieder her.

Confirmed with Gerhard Gramberg, Kränze, viertes Bändchen, Oldenburg: Schulze'sche Buchhandlung, 1816, page 195.
