Nu ruger Nat over Enge
og alt i Mørke forgaar.
Jeg lytter her fra min Rude,
det tier saa tomt derude,
det er som naar Klokken staar.

Da hører jeg Røster kalde
som op fra en Huldreby.
Jeg ved det er mig de vil finde.
Godnat da I to herinde!
Jeg kommer igen ved Gry.

Saa gik jeg mig ud i Natten
og droges saa sælsomt hen.
Gud naade hver Far og Mage
som vel fandt sin Vej tilbage,
men aldrig kom helt igen!

À présent la Nuit s’étend sur les prés,
et tout disparaît dans l’obscurité.
J’écoute ici, depuis ma fenêtre,
dehors tout est désert et silencieux,
c’est comme lorsqu’une horloge s’arrête.

Alors j’entends des voix qui appellent,
comme montant d’une cité de huldres.
Je sais que c’est moi qu’elles cherchent.
Bonne nuit donc, à vous deux, ici !
Je reviendrai à l’aube.

Alors je sortis dans la nuit,
et fus étrangement entraîné au loin.
Que Dieu ait pitié de tout père et de tout mari
qui a bien retrouvé son chemin,
mais qui n’est jamais tout à fait revenu.
