Unsre Herzen waren wie Geschwister,
Die zusammen lachten und sich härmten,
Wie verlaßne Kinder bang sich wärmten
An des Herdes heimlichem Geknister.

Vor des Lebens Macht und Grausamkeiten
Band sie gleicher Trotz und gleiches Weinen,
Nicht Geschick noch eignes Widerstreiten
Trennte je ihr magisches Sicheinen.
Steigt verschlungner Chor der Herzen alle
Wogenhoch auch über Süd und Norden -
Unverhofft begegnen sich im Schwalle
Deins und meins in zärtlichen Akkorden.

Nos cœurs étaient comme frère et sœur
Qui ensemble riaient et se tourmentaient,
Comme des enfants abandonnés craintifs ils se réchauffaient
Aux discrets pétillements du foyer.

Face à la force et la cruauté de la vie
Une même fierté et un même chagrin les liait
Ni le destin ni une véritable opposition
Jamais ne divisait leur magique unisson.
Sur les hautes vagues du sud et du nord
S'élève un ballet embrouillé de cœurs ;
Providentiellement, dans la houle, le tien et le mien
Se sont rencontrés dans un accord délicat.
