Und lege den Stab hin so gerne!
O Deiner gedacht ich tausend Mal
In weit durchwanderter Ferne! 
Ich hatte mein Hoffen auf Sand gebaut,
Drum musst es im Winde zerstieben;
Du einzig, Du einzig, so lieb und traut,
Bist immer das gleiche geblieben! 

Noch singet Dein Strom; wie er sonst mir sang
Der Kindheit fröhliche Reigen;
Noch immer umarmt mich Dein Felsenhang
Mit feierlich-grüssendem Schweigen!
Die Welt, der ich diente, ertheilt nur Schmerz
Und bluthende Wunde zum Lohne.
O Heimat, o Heimat, thu auf Dein Herz  
Dem wieder gefundenen Sohne!
