by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798 - 1874)

Zur Freude will sich nicht gestalten
Language: German (Deutsch)
Zur Freude will sich nicht gestalten,
was mir so tief bewegt das Herz;
geheimnisvoll nur will es walten,
ein Traum, ein stilles Leid, ein Schmerz.

Oft will's aus meinen Augen dringen
der Blume gleich nach Luft und Licht,
in hellen Tönen will's erklingen,
doch [Schweigen nur]1 ist meine Pflicht.

Ja, schweigend darfst du nur erscheinen
und still dich freu'n des Sonnenlichts,
du darfst nur dichten, darfst nur weinen,
o meine Lieb', und weiter nichts.
