Num lenço que fora teu;
Caíu ao mar, disse o mar:
"Quem lho vai levar, sou eu!"
Este lenço que me deste,
Já passou águas do mar;
Onda que foi e que veio...
Mas que não torna a voltar!

O lenço que me deixaste,
Meu amor! dei o, também,
A uma filha que chorava
Com pena da sua mãe...
Este lenço que me deste,
Beijaste o tu? Benza o Deus...
Fala de acenos, dizendo:
"Meu Amor, adeus, adeus!"

I began to cry, from longing,
in a handkerchief that was yours
It fell into the sea, and the sea said:
"Who is going to take it back? I am!"
This handkerchief that you gave me,
it has been borne across the seas;
A wave that came and went ...
never to return again!
 
The handkerchief that you left me,
My love! I gave it, in turn,
To a girl who was crying
With grief for her mother...
This handkerchief you gave me,
Did you kiss it? God bless it.
It speaks of farewells, saying
"My love, adieu, adieu!"
