Jeg saae -- i Dybet, da jeg saae Øiet!
Min Tanke aldrig hun vide faaer,
Vi hilsedes, vi vare saa fornøied'
Det var et stort Minut og dog saa rigt,
En Duft af Blomster strømmed' mig imøde!
Jeg tænkte paa - en Sang, et Ungdoms-Digt,
Jeg nynner den - og mine Kinder gløde.

Je vis -- au fond de ses yeux je vis !
Jamais elle ne saurait saisir mes pensées,
Nous nous sommes salués, nous étions si contents
Ce fut une grande minute et pourtant si riche,
Un parfum de fleur montait vers moi !
Je pensais à, une chanson, un poème de jeunesse,
Je la fredonnai -- et mes joues s'embrasèrent.
